Offering Vs. Sacrifice

In this post, we will discuss the idea of offering vs. sacrifice. Many of us go through the motions of Sunday thinking, “I’m sacrificing this time for God.” But the word sacrifice can bring a negative mindset into our thoughts and hearts—as if giving our time to the Lord is a burden. In reality, these moments are a privilege.
Instead, consider the word offering. We get to offer our time, focus, and energy to the Lord so that He can revive our hearts for the week ahead.
Holding Fast to God’s Truth
This morning our pastor shared the verse Hebrews 11:26
“He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward.”
This past week I’ve seen and heard many controversial things—ideas the world strongly pushes, and sadly, ideas many believers agree with (the ideas themselves we will discuss throughout this blog page). Yet many of these ideas and beliefs are ones Jesus Himself rebuked and that Scripture clearly warns against.
When we face political tension or difficult ethical questions, we are not called to lean on our own wisdom. We are called to look at what Scripture says plainly, not in between the lines, not what looks like something gray (cause there are no gray areas), and not what we want to pick and choose to believe. When we stand up for Christ and for the truth found in God’s Word, we are doing what Paul encouraged the churches in Philippi and Thessalonica to do—hold fast to the Scriptures.
And when we choose obedience to God over the approval of people, we are offering ourselves as a living sacrifice, submitting to His will and standing firm in His righteousness.
Courage in the Face of Reproach
I’m incredibly proud of a good friend who bravely spoke up on a controversial topic in her college class. She responded with both truth and God’s love. Yet, instead of standing with her, many who claim to follow Christ reproached her and aligned themselves with worldly ideals.
Her experience is a clear reflection of Hebrews 11:26. Our views, when grounded in Scripture, are not meant to be popular with the world. Seeking the world’s approval often means turning against God.
Scripture reminds us—not only should we expect to be mocked or hated for Christ’s sake, but it is actually a blessing. We live in a broken world that loves its own pleasures more than pleasing the Creator, and the closer we draw to God, the more hostility we may encounter.
A Call for This Week
Don’t let your daily routines distract you from God’s presence and blessings this week. Let’s intentionally offer ourselves as a living sacrifice—whether that means: shifting our mindset, giving God more of our attention, or speaking up for truth despite opposition.
Take comfort in Jesus’ words from Matthew 5:10:
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
