Faithful Provision
Too often, we neglect the blessings we have been given. This past week, we went through a time of severe weather that caused power outages, loss of water, and the inability to leave our homes. It's moments like these that make us realize something so profound. We thrive off of these basic necessities, such as electricity and running water, that we don't know how to function without them. Yet, even with the absence of comforts, God provides for our needs.
Throughout this winter storm, God's provision was displayed through the discipleship of His people. A church opened its doors to shelter people and families from the cold, provided them with food and water, and a place to sleep. After this, they helped others with trees and debris trapping them in their homes. In the midst of hardship, love was shown, and the gospel was shared with anyone willing to listen. What was a season of cold bitterness and loss became a testimony of God's grace working through His Church. Even when resources are scarce, God's provision is never lacking. I don't mean this to seem as if hard times won't come. True provision is not ultimately found in physical resources, but through the sustaining power of the Gospel that carries us through.
Although my husband and I were without power and water and unable to leave our home for several days, I have never experienced so much peace. God provided for our every need; we were never cold and never without the assurance that God was present with us (which is true provision). Our circumstances were uncertain, but our Provider was not.
Many people did not have the same experience as we did. Others may have experienced fear, exhaustion, and suffering. However, God is still good even when our circumstances seem dim. I'm reminded of the thief on the cross beside Jesus. He was at his lowest hour; he had hit rock bottom, and had no hope by worldly standards, but Jesus met him there and said, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43). This is so true for many of us today, through the best of days and the worst of days God still provides even if we fail to notice it.
In the coming months, we will be talking about our purpose in Christ, and this season has deeply impressed that truth upon my heart. Watching the church meet the physical and spiritual needs of those around them was a beautiful picture of what it means to live out that purpose. They loved, served, and shared the gospel with people at their lowest moments. This is where faith takes root—when we love one another as Christ has loved us. Jesus Himself tells us,
“By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35).
May we not forget the provision of God in seasons of comfort or in seasons of trial. May we learn to live with grateful hearts, open hands, and a willingness to be used by Him to provide for others, just as He so faithfully provides for us.
